“Dogen is not saying that there is some absolutely right view (about the nature of water). He’s saying that the right view is to see that our view is limited and conditioned. My point of view is the only way I can see the world. This is not only true for me; it is a human condition. When we hear from others, we can have some understanding of how the world looks from their side. By listening, our views become broader and more flexible. We can learn that “my view” is not always absolutely right. This is how we study the world with a broader perspective; this is the meaning of studying Dharma and teachings.”
